Tip from my Interior Design Campanion:
If you are comfortable and confident keeping the floors and walls a neutral colour, that's fine. There are a variety of beautiful off-whites that create warmth and atmosphere while maintaining a neutral overall look.
You can bring in your colour in furnishings and/or accessories. The fabrics on your furnishings can also be kept neutral overall if you don't want to commit to too much colour.
Then, it becomes even easier to add a splash of colour in accessories and change them out periodically
What about the walls? Are you going to change the colour? This will play a part in what you select for the rest of the space. If you are going to paint, do you want to add more drama and colour? Remember that with paint, the colour you choose from a small swatch will be more intense when put on the entire wall!
If you love blue and want to see more of that colour in your space, I would advise that you select a colour of blue 1 to 2 shades lighter than you think you want.
Once it gets on the walls it will probably be very close to your choice. This is particularly important the more intense colour you select
If you want to add colour and drama to the walls but are not ready to see every wall in the space more dramatic, go back to the 'Focal Point' discussion...is there an interesting wall that you can paint a different color? Perhaps a faux finish would work with your decor...there are some simple techniques you can do, or hire it out to a Paint Contractor if this is within your budget.
When working with a bathroom, unless your home has bathrooms that are so huge you can live in them, you will be able to add the more intense colours and it will look fantastic, however use neutral in the smaller bathrooms and bring in the rest of your colour in the accessories and features.
Dark colours tend to make a room look smaller if the entire room is painted that colour. So be careful here
